about
Billy Corgan of the band Smashing Pumpkins once said in an interview about writing songs for their second album Siamese Dream: '...when I came to a line that made me cringe with embarrassment, that's the one I would use...'
For me, 'Change' was embarrassing to write and even more so to sing in the first instance. I felt I was really putting myself on the line in singing it and allowing my vulnerablility to be so public.
The song is an open admission and acceptance of change(s) in my life. While I feel this to be a personal confession and surrender to the inevitability of change - it is a universal theme that effects everybody in some way or another.
The reponse to the song was positive from the outset by punters which was pleasing. It has taken on a new dimension of depth in the version that appears on 'Lines Are Drawn'.
The organ keyboard part played by Matthew Hill in the interlude offers a moment of composure which helps the song reach a serene conclusion.
lyrics
I feel different
A change of season
There is something a little strange
I must change
A gradual creeping
A final dawning
Dark nights will be swept away
With a change
As sure as the sunrise today
There is a change
And it’s coming for me
Change
I will change
I will grasp the nettle yeah in exchange
For change
I will change
It feels good to me
The time is ripe for change
General or local
Resistance is futile
Escape plans are not in range
For change
Acceptance, Patience, Trusting, Silence
These are extraordinary days
For change
Change
I will change
I will grasp the nettle yeah in exchange
For change
I will change
It feels good to me
The time is ripe for change
