Matt Reiner and the Aunt Sallys hail from the city of Adelaide - which is the capital city of the driest state (South Australia) in the driest inhabited continent (Australia).
The song 'Goyder's Line' is inspired by a boundary line across rural inland South Australia corresponding to a rainfall boundary believed to indicate the edge of the area suitable for agriculture. This line of demarcation was devised by the surveyor George Goyder in 1865.
According to Goyder, north of the line, rainfall was not reliable enough and not suitable for cropping. Whereas to the south, the vegetation was more abundant and agreeable to farming and horticultural pursuits.
The song uses the idea of Goyder's Line and references that in terms of a relationship.
lyrics
I look to the north in this heat and the sweat
I contemplate what we are on this cigarette
Is this our time?
Is this our Goyder’s Line?
South of the line is safe and is free
But north is a question - and uncertainty
Is this our time?
Is this our Goyder’s Line?
I can’t entertain the thought of demarcating you
Lines are drawn and lines are crossed
But not in case of you
Delicately drawn and sensitively kept
These lines that are drawn they begged to be stepped
Is this our time?
Is this our Goyder’s Line?
Visions of optimism and visions of hope
Of what lies ahead in the scheme and the scope
Is this our time?
Is this our Goyder’s Line?
I can’t entertain the thought of demarcating you
Lines are drawn and lines are crossed
But not in case of you
